In edizione limitata, l’acqua aromatica è dedicata alla Vergine Santa protettrice di Vieste e dei viestani. E’ il mio modo di omaggiarla, da quest’anno sono cittadina viestana anche io.
Nella confezione è raffigurata la cattedrale vestita per l’intronizzazione della Santa. L’immagine è tratta da un’ olio su tela degli anni ’60, del pittore Filippo Giacomo D’Errico, mio zio, ed è sorprendente ritrovarne lo stesso tendaggio e gli stessi colori, una tradizione che si protrae fino ad oggi. E chi si trova a Vieste in questi giorni può riscontrarlo personalmente.
Chi è San Maria? Narra la leggenda che fu oggetto di contesa tra viestani e peschiciani. E’ un simulacro ligneo che probabilmente ha ornato la polena di una nave e che in seguito al suo naufragio è stata portata dalle onde sulla spiaggia di Scialmarino e lì venne poi trovata da alcuni marinai di Vieste e di Peschici, con ciò nacque la contesa per il suo possesso. La contesa si risolse pacificamente col porre la statua su un carro trainato dai buoi, che secondo, l’accordo, sarebbe stata lasciata là dove i buoi si fossero diretti. La fortuna toccò alla città di Vieste che ogni anno, il 9 maggio, in ricordo del felice ritrovamento, riporta le preziosa statua a Merino. In quel luogo venne poi costruito il Santuario di Santa Maria di Merino, una chiesa tuttora esistente il cui nucleo antico risale al XI-XII secolo, scomparso in seguito ad un maremoto.*
Oggi si radunano per la passeggiata del 9 maggio, migliaia di persone provenienti da tutto il mondo, per percorrere a piedi le spiagge che da Vieste portano a Santa Maria, si parte dal mattino e ritorna la sera quando si riporta la Santa in Cattedrale cantando tutto il tempo le canzoni di Maria, ripetute come un mantra, una preghiera!
